K9EID - Remembering Bob Heil
The local and worldwide HAM community was all very saddened by the loss of Bob Heil - K9EID, the founder of Heil Sound. Bob was a great friend to the local community and often spoke at Ham radio club meetings. Below are some photos of the last time he spoke at an MVDX/CC club meeting.
For much more information about Bob and his contributions, please see the ARRL tribute at: https://www.arrl.org/news/bob-heil-k9eid-silent-key
From a personal perspective, Bob was helpful to me when I got started in Ham radio in the late 70’s. Like many others in that timeframe, I entered the hobby through Citizens’ Band, being one of the guys monitoring channel 19 while driving the highways. But after making the switch to ham radio, I took one more step with Bob’s help. At a seminar at one of the ARCH March conventions, Bob converted my Midland 23 channel radio, to a mobile 10-meter FM set, with repeater offset. So you might say that Bob officially ended my CB activity and fully entrenched me in Ham radio!
73 my dear friend, and thanks for all of your help and support over the years.

Lewis-Clark Hamfest - May 19, 2022
The Hamvention - May 20-22, 2022
Lewis and Clark Hamfest, March 19, 2022
The Lewis and Clark Hamfest was at a slightly different location this year. Still at Lewis and Clark Community college, but now in “The Commons” building. This is a nice facility with a good-sized exhibition room. But right away I noticed there were no concessions, food or drink available.
The main exhibition room was well-sized for the Hamfest. And it felt like a very laid-back and pleasant environment. There were additional rooms outside the main hall that were used for VE testing and Forums. I did not attend any, but I understand that Bob Heil did a forum via Zoom.
Hamvention Xenia/Dayton, Ohio - May 20-22, 2022
Many hams from across the US, and some DX locations, were anxiously awaiting the return of Hamvention after a 2-year hiatus due to Covid. The major facility for Hamvention was the Green County Fairgrounds in Xenia, OH, with many of the off-site activities being held in Dayton. For those who haven’t been to Hamvention since it moved from the old Hara Arena in Dayton, the new Fairgrounds venue is a bit different. There are five major buildings used for indoor exhibits, and a sixth which is used for Forums. They are arranged in a circular pattern with an open area in-between, much like a college campus. During Hamvention, this open area is occupied by many food trucks, and by the constant flow of hams moving from building to building, with MFJ bags full of their newly acquired treasures. There was a full schedule of Forums held in 3 parallel tracts. I attended a forum on Amateur TV given by Mel - KØPFX, and others on Sporadic E propagation, DX and ARRL discussions. Most of the flea market area was within the racetrack, with some of the larger vendors operating in tents outside the racetrack. MVDX/CC member Mike “the Tube Man” WBØSND was there with his usual selection of vacuum tubes for sale.
